Almost 40% of Bulgarians reduce their expenses for health care due to the crisis
Some 38% of adult Bulgarians say that their family is forced to reduce their expenses for health care such as medicines, dental services, medical check-ups etc. because of their difficult economic situation. These figures were revealed by the latest national representative survey conducted by TNS BBSS and commissioned by klassa.bg.The tightening of family budgets does not only lead to “cutting expenses for health care.” As many as two-thirds of the respondents in the survey said that their households have reduced their expenses for clothes, shoes and accessories. Only a fifth of the respondents (22%) said they did not need to resort to such restrictions. About half of adult Bulgarians reduced their expenses for transport. About 37% of respondents did not have to reduce their expenses for transport. As for home expenses, half of Bulgarian households have refrained from making improvements and repairs to their apartments or houses. Almost 40% said they do not plan such expenses at all, i.e. they do not materially refurbish their homes.
Just over half of Bulgarians (47%) have cut down on expensive purchases for the home such as electric appliances, furniture etc., while a similar percentage (46%) said that they never buy such items. Just below 50% of Bulgarians have reduced their expenses for entertainment and travel, while about 40% said they never spend money on such things, so they do not have to reduce their budget in this respect at all.
Reducing expenses for clothes, travel and domestic appliances is one thing, but reducing expenses for food and everyday household items is another thing. As many as 61% of Bulgarians said they try to reduce their everyday expenses for food and other household items, or have given up some household items and/or buy cheaper products in an attempt to manage their family's budget. Most restrictions in this respect are made by Bulgarians over 55 years of age – as many as three-fourths of them have to reduce expenses for food in order to balance their budget. Residents of villages and Bulgarians with elementary or lower education are in the same situation – about 70% of them cut their everyday household expenses.
