Both employers and employees want flexible working hours

Both employers and employees agree with the idea of hiring personnel with a flexible working time schedule and hourly remuneration. Some 77.9% of the company heads and 87.8% of the workers polled approve of it, showed a survey of the Bulgarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI). The first conclusion is that labour legislation should be urgently amended in the direction of making possible employment on flexible working patterns with hourly remuneration, said BCCI representatives. This is imperative for various industries of a seasonal nature. The employers who do not approve of such schemes comment that the nature of their labour process does not make possible such an option. And workers who do not approve of this kind of labour arrangements fear incorrect changes in the working hours and payment that will not be adequate for the work they have done.

“Labour legislation should be urgently amended in the direction of making possible employment on flexible working patterns with hourly remuneration. With regard to flexible working time, 88% of the employees (unlike syndicates) approve of it and regard hourly payment as a measure of their work,” said BCCI Chairman Tsvetan Simeonov. “We need a minimum hourly rate for various branches, like that in the United States. Do we need to invent the wheel? What is BGN 270/173.6 hours a month on average – BGN 1.555 per hour ...,” comment business representatives.

According to the survey, two-thirds of the employers are inclined to accept wage growth bound to an increase in labour productivity, 16% are willing to accept the economy’s competitiveness as an additional indicator and only 14% accept that inflation should be a factor for the calculation of the minimum wage.
