FDI increase by almost 24% in 10 months

Foreign direct investments (FDI) in Bulgaria for the January - October 2012 period totaled €1.335 bn, showed preliminary data of the Bulgarian National Bank (BNB), published on Friday. FDI registered an almost 24% increase, compared to the first 10 months of last year, when their volume amounted to €1.081 bn. However, FDI reported a drastic decline in the last three years, dropping from over €6 bn in 2008.

In October 2012 alone, there was an outflow of €41 mln in FDI, while in the same month of last year, there was an inflow of €369 mln. BNB’s repeated calculations showed that in Q3 2012, FDI in the country totaled €426 mln, almost as much as in the same period of last year. Proceeds from investments by foreign persons for the first 10 months of 2012, particularly in real estate, amounted to €198 mln, compared to €212 mln for January-October 2011.

The largest FDI in Bulgaria by countries for the above-mentioned period were made by the Netherlands (€622 mln), Luxembourg (€239 mln) and Russia (€145 mln). Meanwhile, the largest negative net flows were to Austria (-€150 mln) and the UK (-€146 mln).

The trade balance for October 2012 was negative, amounting to €344 mln, compared to a deficit of €234.2 mln for October 2011, showed BNB’s data. In January-October 2012, the trade deficit totaled almost €3.1 bn (7.8% of GDP), compared to a deficit of €1.5 bn (3.9% of GDP) for the same period of 2011.

Exports (FOB) stood at €1.86 bn in October 2012, reporting an increase of €51 mln (2.8%), compared to October 2011 (€1.81 bn). In January-October 2012, exports (FOB) amounted to €17.3 bn, having increased by €382 mln (2.3%) vs the same period of 2011 (€16.9 bn).

Imports (FOB) for October 2012 totaled €2.2 bn, registering an increase of €161 mln (7.9%), compared to October 2011 (€2.04 bn). In January - October 2012, imports (FOB) reached €20.4 bn, increasing by almost €2 bn (10.8%) vs the same period of 2011 (€18.4 bn).
