Food prices up by 63% in a year

The prices of only four out of 30 staple food products did not rise in 2012 and the price increase of all the other products was in the range of 5% to 63%, showed summary data of the Commission on Commodity Exchanges and Wholesale Markets for the period from January 2012 to January 2013.

The price increase of most goods in the consumer basket was due to the severe drought in 2012 which worsened the crop. The highest price increase was that of potatoes. Currently, they sell at BGN 0.70/kg, compared to BGN 0.43/kg last year. The prices of greenhouse tomatoes increased from BGN 1.96/kg to BGN 2.39/kg.

The price of vegetable oil rose from BGN 2.36/l to BGN 2.77/l and the price of flour rose by 13% to BGN 99/kg, up from BGN 87/kg in 2012.

Dry haricot beans was the legume which registered the highest price increase – from BGN 2.62/kg to BGN 3.09/kg. The greatest increase in meat prices was that of poultry – from BGN 3.68/kg to BGN 4.14/kg. The only staple commodities whose prices decreased slightly were sugar, lentils, rice and garlic.
