Growth in industry and a drastic decline in construction output for December 2012

The National Statistical Institute (NSI) reported on Thursday some 4.1% growth in domestic industrial production for December 2012, compared to the same month of 2011 and a decrease of 10.4% in construction output on a monthly basis. The decline in civil engineering was 18.6% and the annual drop in the overall index of construction output was 15.1% in December, having reached 15.4% in building construction and 14.7 % in civil and engineering construction.

On a monthly basis, Bulgaria’s industrial output rose by 2.4%. In December 2012, the extracting industry reported an increase of 21.9%, compared to November, and the production and distribution of electricity, heating energy and gas rose by 9.6%, while the processing industry registered a 0.2% drop.

A more significant decline in the processing industry was observed in the production of basic metals (15.6%), rubber and plastic products (15.0%), beverages (12.0%), timber and wooden products, excluding furniture (10.9%) and chemical products (9.1%).

A year-on-year increase in industrial production was recorded in the production and distribution of electricity, heating energy and gas (9.2%) and in the processing industry (2.3%), while output in the extracting industry dropped by 7.4%.

A more significant increase over the previous years in the processing industry was registered in the pulp and paper industry (89.2%), the growth in the production of vehicles excluding cars was 39.1% and that in the manufacture of electrical equipment - 23.7 %.

A decrease was reported in the output of basic metals (20.0%), chemical products (15.5%) and pharmaceutical products (11.5%).
