Bulgaria PM meets with Greece foreign minister
Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov held Tuesday a meeting with Greek Minister for Foreign Affairs Nikos Kotzias, the press service of the government announced.Mr Kotzias is paying a visit to Bulgaria to take part in a meeting of the foreign ministers of the South-East European Cooperation Process (SEECP) countries.
“Diversification of sources and routes for natural gas supplies is one of the main priorities of the Bulgarian government. Therefore, our country relies on the realisation of interconnectors with neighbouring countries and especially that with Greece,” PM Borisov said, speaking at the meeting.
“This is a strategically important project not only for Bulgaria and Greece but also for the entire region of Southeast Europe,” Boyko Borisov was explicit.
He recalled the increased state guarantee of EUR 80 million in the 2015 budget to EUR 110 million in the current budget was an expression of the Bulgarian government’s serious commitment to the project realisation.
Boyko Borisov also put emphasis on the efforts the Greek government made to create all conditions needed for the realisation of the interconnector.
Mr Borisov and Mr Kotzias pointed out real actions started being taken to build the system connection through the signing of the final investment decision at the end of 2015 and it was expected its commercial exploitation would begin in mid-2018.
The Bulgarian head of government informed his guest it was expected the second phase of the market test of the project for submission of binding offers would be launched in June.
The first one ended in April. 9 companies submitted offers to reserve capacity of over 4.3 billon m3 of gas a year.
At the meeting, PM Borisov and Minister Kotzias also discussed the measures being implemented to tackle the migration flow to Europe and common problems Bulgaria and Greece face as EU’s external borders.
Borisov remarked Bulgaria would continue lending support and showing solidarity to the countries that are most seriously affected by the refugee flow.
Bulgaria has already sent humanitarian aid to Hungary, Greece, and the Republic of Macedonia.
Boyko Borisov and Nikos Kotzias think bilateral cooperation between the two countries’ security services is successful and so is the effect produced from the implementation of the agreement on police and customs cooperation signed between Bulgaria, Greece, and Turkey in May of 2016.
The Prime Minister was explicit pressure at the Bulgarian-Greek border had decreased significantly due to joint efforts.
He pointed to good cooperation and the recent fast readmission of a group of illegal migrants detained at the Bulgarian-Greek border.
