Bulgaria Ombudsman: We propose VAT on donated food is dropped as of Jan 1, 2017

Maya Manolova, Ombudsman of the Republic of Bulgaria, held Monday a press conference on the start of an initiative titled Every Day – Easter, FOCUS News Agency reported.
“We propose VAT on donated food is dropped as of January 1, 2017. Along with business associations, chains of stores, the Bulgarian Red Cross (BRC), the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency (BFSA), and the Association of Restaurant Owners, we are launching the campaign to stimulate the donation of food products,” the Ombudsman announced.
Ms Manolova recalled the initiative was a continuation of the successfully conducted in April campaign themed Easter for Everyone – Give the Elderly a Holiday, which had been organised by the same institutions – the food industry business associations, chain of stores, BFSA, the Bulgarian Food Bank (BFB), and BRC.
“Nearly BGN 1 million was collected, BGN 650,000 of which was money and there were food products worth BGN 360,000,” the Ombudsman pointed out.
The official stated the organisers had back then taken on the commitment of turning the initiative into a year-long practice.
“We took on a commitment to turn donations from a campaign into a daily thing; therefore, we called this campaign Every Day – Easter as it aims to make donations an everyday activity,” Manolova commented.
In her words, the campaign is not aimed only against anger and poverty in Bulgaria but aims to stimulate volunteering, compassion, and donations in the Bulgarian society.
