Bulgarian court refuses registration of DOST party because its abbreviation is a word in Turkish

Sofia City Court refused the registration of politician Lyutvi Mestan’s newly-established party because of its abbreviation.
The abbreviation of Democrats for Responsibility, Freedom and Tolerance party is DOST in Bulgarian, which is a Turkish word meaning “friendship”. The Turkish word supposes that DOST will be an ethnic party, the press office of Sofia City Court announced.
The Turkish word raises the question whether the political party violates Article 6 of the Political Parties Act, which requires for such subjects to organise their public manifestations and appearances, their addresses and the working out of documents to be in Bulgarian language.
According to the court, the facts collected in the case suppose that the applicant has absolutely deliberately aimed at such an abbreviation and this concrete word.
The motives of the court also state that the party has openly promoted itself through the abbreviation and this happened in the public area. There is also an example with the chanting of political party’s abbreviation at meetings and rallies, which will be a public manifestation in foreign language.
Thus the court concludes that there is a violation of Article 6 of the Political Parties Act.
