GERB begins consultations on the impeachment of the Mayor of Haskovo

“We are launching consultations in order to achieve unanimity with the groups of councillors in the local parliament for the impeachment of the Mayor of Haskovo Georgi Ivanov,” Ivan Petrov from GERB (Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria), Chairman of the party’s municipal structure, announced yesterday. He explained that the reason for the impeachment was the unprecedented closure of the municipality last week, when its employees went on leave. Another of GERB's motives for the demanded impeachment is the overall financial policy of the Mayor, which resulted in a distraint on the municipality’s bank accounts due to its debts to construction companies.

The Mayor of Haskovo can be dismissed from his post if two-thirds of the municipal councillors, or 28, vote for this. Then, if the decision is not litigated in court, the Municipal Election Commission must remove Georgi Ivanov from office. Meanwhile, it became clear that representatives of the Chief Labour Inspectorate (CLI) began checking whether the Labour Code and the respective regulations for using employees' leaves had been observed. A team from CLI arrived in Haskovo last week at the request of Governor Rumen Danev but the inspectors were not allowed into the locked building of the local administration. Currently, the Regional Prosecutor’s Office is also inspecting last week’s actions of the Mayor of Haskovo.
