BDZ reports 8% growth in freight in January

“The Cargo Department with the BDZ (Bulgarian State Railways) recorded an 8% increase in freight in January, compared to the same month last year,” said Deputy Transport Minister Kamen Kichev. According to him, this shows that the economy is recovering. “The State increased its commitment to the Railways,” said Kichev. The World Bank loan, which will be completed in June, is a State liability and BDZ will not be obliged to reimburse it, although the money will be invested in the company. The European Commission granted a notification for the first tranche of the loan, which amounts to BGN 140 mln. With the money, the carrier will settle its most pressing liabilities to creditors and will return part of its debts to the National Railway Infrastructure Company. The entire debt to the infrastructure company, which currently amounts to BGN 100 mln, will be repaid by the end of 2014.
