A former head of customs accuses a senior representative of GERB of taking a bribe of BGN 4 mln

A senior representative of GERB (Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria) has taken a bribe of BGN 4 mln from people from the excise duties sector to interfere in the work of Vanyo Tanov, head of the Customs Agency, and his former deputy Anthoniy Strandjev. This became clear from the words of Strandjev to bTV yesterday. Again, in order to interfere and hamper their work, especially after the adoption of the ordinance on excisable goods, their arrest was contemplated. “This man is in Bulgaria and the things for which he has been paid are beginning to happen,” said Strandjev. Asked about the post of this senior representative of GERB, he did not deny that the person in question might be a minister. “This may be someone from the Interior Ministry as well,” added Strandjev.

Tanov’s former deputy said he had received the information during a conversation with former interior minister Rumen Petkov in Stanishev’s cabinet. In turn, Petkov explained in Parliament this conversation with “rumours in the National Assembly”. Although these were just rumours, he said he had decided to inform Strandjev about them in order to take the appropriate measures and check the signal. He added that SIMs (Special Investigative Means) had been used during that meeting at the beginning of May.

Strandjev also believes that the conversation was recorded. “I guess my other “friends”, as well as Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov and PM Boyko Borissov, must have also heard it. Everybody is aware that there is a huge problem and that not everything recorded becomes generally known,” he said. According to him, the actions required against the bribe, have already begun to happen. “From all we have being seeing for a month and a half, don’t you have the impression that something illegal has happened? And it has happened with the knowledge of the Interior Minister and the Prime Minister,” he asked.
