The Government Made a Gaffe by Including Bulgaria in Euro Plus Pact - Union of Democratic Forces

Bulgaria's inclusion in the new Euro Plus Pact is a gaffe of the
government because it was not in the clear about the
commitments which are being undertaken, Union of Democratic
Forces (UDF) leader Martin Dimitrov told journalists. He was
speaking in Veliko Turnovo (North Central Bulgaria) where the
UDF National Council held a meeting Sunday.

According to Dimitrov, by joining the pact Bulgaria becomes a
guarantor of a loan, initially for 3,000 million euro and later
- for 6,000 million euro, which is one-sixth of the country's
GDP. "We are for the EU and the euro, but Bulgaria is the
poorest country in the union and cannot take on such a great
burden," Dimitrov said.

In his words, the other grave problem posed by the commitments
to the pact is the fact that some European countries call for
harmonization of the taxes in the union. The UDF suggested the
introduction of the 10 per cent corporate tax and the flat tax
while the integrated taxation in the EU will be disastrous for
Bulgaria, the UDF leader said.

Dimitrov pointed out that the undertaken commitments are liable
to negotiation and the problem will be tabled for discussion in
Parliament.

Bulgaria urgently needs three decisive measures to cope with the
critical for the Bulgarian citizens situation, a position of
the UDF National Council received at BTA Sunday stated.

First comes the need for the government to curb the unfoundedly
rising prices in Bulgaria. The Commission for the Protection of
Consumers, the Commission for the Protection of Competition and
the other bodies having something to do with the problem should
begin to carry out their functions and defend Bulgarian citizens
against the arbitrary actions of various monopolies and cartel
agreements. The moratorium on fuel prices is yet another case of
avoiding the solution of the problem with monopolies and the
contraband of fuel.

The second measure put forward by the UDF is immediate and final
stopping of the Belene n-plant project, which will generate
enormous debts for the state that the Bulgarian citizens will
have to repay over the next decades.

The UDF also insists that the Bulgarian government launch
immediate action in respect to the necessary changes in
secondary education in Bulgaria.
