The government seeks a new building for SDC

The government committed itself to solving the problem with the lack of an appropriate building for Sofia District Court (SDC). That was announced on Sunday after a meeting between Vladimira Yaneva, Chairperson of Sofia City Court, PM Boyko Borissov and Deputy PM Tsvetan Tsvetanov. According to Focus Information Agency, Mrs. Yaneva informed the government leaders about the problems faced by the court. PM Borissov pledged to hold a new meeting in a week in order to discuss the case. It is expected that Boyko Borissov, Tsvetan Tsvetanov, Minister of Justice Diana Kovacheva and the chairmen of Sofia City Court and Sofia District Court will visit the building in order to discuss a way to solve the problem.

The premises of SDC on 6 Dragan Tsankov Str. are in an extremely bad state. The greatest problem is the lack of enough space for the biggest district court in Bulgaria. Some of the courtrooms are as big as train compartments, while lawyers have to study court cases in rooms as big as train toilets.

Three and even four judges often share a common office. The little five-storey building has only one old lift, which is used only by employees. The hundreds of clients of the court are forced to climb the narrow staircase every day. As much as ten court secretaries are crammed in a single room. The interior and furniture date back to the 1970s and an atmosphere of neglect pervades the building.

The issue of SDC's building became topical again after the earthquake in Pernik on May 22, 2012. Then the Chairman of the Supreme Court of Cassation, Lazar Gruev, told the Supreme Judicial Council that the building was dangerous for the life and health of citizens. He said that the building did not meet any requirements and did not even have an emergency staircase. “Should an incident happen in order to solve the problem?” Gruev asked then.
