Land owners of plots within Natura 2000 to receive compensations

Owners of land located within the Natura 2000 ecological network will get compensations under a programme on rural areas, announced experts from the Agriculture Ministry and the Agriculture Fund. This applies only to the 102 zones declared by the Environment Ministry. The compensations will be for the bans on various activities and the amounts to be paid for each one will be in the range of €20-70 per hectare.
Compensations of €30/ha will be paid  in cases where the implementation of investment projects had to be cancelled following a redesignation of the plots. The ban on mowing lawns until July 1 will be compensated by €70/ha. The prohibitions are mandatory and will be valid for the entire plot even when the boundary of the zone passes only through a part of it.

“Now, 10% of the invested money can be recovered additionally, and with it the owner will be able to recover up to 70% of the money spent,” said Alexander Atanassov, Senior Expert on Natura 2000 at the Ministry of Agriculture and Food.

Applications under this measure must be submitted from March 1 till May 15, concurrently with the documents for the uniform payments per plot of land. Farmers will be liable to checks by both the Agriculture Ministry and the Environment Ministry. If they fail to submit documents for compensations, they will be fined only by the Ministry of Environment.
