Bulgaria ranked last in terms of innovations and frontrunner in terms of low-grade road infrastructure

Bulgaria ranked 95th in terms of innovations and 135th in terms of quality of the road infrastructure, announced yesterday Minister of Economy, Energy and Tourism, Traicho Traikov. He cited a study of the World Economic Forum including 139 countries.

The fact that our country ranked 127th in terms of brain-drain is very embarrassing, specified Traicho Traikov.
According to him, currently, the Bulgarian economy relies primarily on its natural resources and cheap labour because high value-added sectors do not employ more than 500,000 people. The state budget cannot allocate funds for more investments in these sectors and EU grants under Operational Programme (OP) Competitiveness must be absorbed. The combination of existing industries and those operating at the research level will result, in the Minister's words, in the setting up of sustainable industrial clusters for Informational Technology (IT), biotechnology, the health industry, which have the potential to promote Bulgaria as a leader in innovations.

Bulgaria ranked 124th in the world in terms of organised crime and 130th in terms of the transparency of government decisions. It was in the group of countries with average economic growth in terms of the criteria of the World Economic Forum. Pursuant to these, 50% of the competitiveness of a given country is determined by the development of higher education, the efficiency of markets for goods and services, the flexibility of the labour market, as well as the development of financial markets and of modern information and communication technologies along with the size of the domestic market. The importance of basic factors for competitiveness, such as institutional development, infrastructure, macroeconomic stability, healthcare and primary education remains significant - 40%.
