A total of 2,000 decares of forests burned down in the Rhodope Mountains

A huge fire burned down over 2,000 decares of coniferous forests between the villages of Gostun and Osenovo in the Rhodope Mountains. The fire broke out near Gostun, which is part of Bansko Municipality at 17.00 hrs on Saturday, announced the Mayor of Bansko, Alexander Kravarov. At 17.20 hrs yesterday the fire was localised but by the end of the editorial completion of Klassa's issue new outbreaks continued to flare up and were being extinguished by the firefighters' rescue teams.

The General Directorate 'Fire Safety and Protection of Population Service' with the Ministry of Interior reported that over the last 24 hours staring on Saturday their teams responded to overall 34 signals for fire outbreaks. Besides, the operation of the firefighters was additionally hampered by the strong winds stirring up the flames further.

"We are keeping the situation near Bansko under control. Currently, we are making all efforts to stop the spreading of the fire,'' stated before FOCUS News Agency last night the Director of GD Fire Safety and Protection of Population Services with the District Directorate of the Ministry of Interior, Blagoevgrad, the Fire Commissioner Kostadin Tashkov. There is still no clarity on the cause of the fire outbreak. We are making every endeavour to extinguish the fire and afterwards find its cause," indicated also the Chief Fire Inspector, Tashkov.
