The number of airline passengers increases by 30%

The number of airline passengers increased by 30% in the first quarter of 2011, compared to the same period last year, showed data of eSky.bg, a website for online bookings for regular and low-cost airlines. The company operates in Poland, Romania and Bulgaria. The highest increase in bookings was registered by Bulgarians. Travel agencies also reported a strong growth in airline bookings, the most sought after destinations being Madrid, London, Vienna, Paris, Milan and Budapest.

eSKY.bg registered increasing passenger confidence in air transport. Passengers flying Wizzair increased by 30%, those flying Lufthansa by 22%, and the number of Ukrainian airline Aerosvit’s passengers for its Sofia-Kiev flights doubled.

The European Commission (EC) approved yesterday a list of airlines banned from operating in the EU. It contains information about all the 269 air carriers licenced in 21 countries. Among these are Afghanistan, Angola, Benin, Congo, the Philippines, Sierra Leone, Sudan, Swaziland, Zambia and others. The black list includes three individual carriers as well: Blue Wing Airlines (Suriname), Meridian Airways (Ghana) and Silverback Cargo Freighters (Rwanda). Ten airlines on the list are allowed to operate in the EU under strict restrictions. Air carriers from Indonesia and the Ukraine were removed from the list.
