A shorter deadline for bad deposits disbursement under consideration

The European Parliament Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs (ECON) is considering a proposal for a shorter deadline for the payment of compensation for bad deposits in the case of insolvency of the bank. This was announced by the press service of the EP ECON at the end of last week. Currently, this disbursement period is 20 days, but in order for financial hardship to be prevented, the depositors will be able to receive part of the compensation amounting to € 5,000 within 5 working days. If the proposal is approved, it should enter into force for all deposit guarantee schemes in 2017, specified the Committee.

Currently, each EU country operates schemes that guarantee deposits and compensates depositors in the event of insolvency of the bank. Nevertheless, MEPs consider that universal mechanisms need to be adopted. Such an example is the proposal for harmonisation of all banks' guarantee ceiling on the deposit amount, which must reach €100,000.
