Relicensing of carriers under higher requirements considered

“The idea of relicensing all carriers under new, higher requirements is being discussed,” said Minister of Transport, Information Technology and Communications Ivaylo Moskovski after a roundtable on the safety of bus services, attended by members of the parliamentary Transport Committee, Deputy PM and Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov and representatives of professional organisations.

Moskovski announced that in the last three days, inspectors from the State Automobile Inspectorate checked 1,885 buses, drew up 255 punitive acts and stopped 26 vehicles from traffic. “The results show that the criteria are inadequate,” said Moskovski. According to him, by the end of the year, centres for technical inspection will be connected with the State Automobile Inspectorate and everything will be monitored in real time.

The Transport Minister will issue an order for setting up a working group that will consider all proposals made in order to initiate legislative amendments. Raising the requirements to drivers is already being discussed. Only people who have been actually doing this work for the last couple of years will be employed. Criteria for age and the mileage of vehicles, especially for the busiest destinations, will be raised as well. Carriers insist on a tax relief for the purchase of new buses and opportunities to use EU funding.
