Ministry of Agriculture proposes higher fines of BGN 10, 000 for fake foodstuffs

The fines imposed for food forgery will be raised from BGN 500 to BGN 10 000, threatened the Agriculture Minister, Miroslav Naydenov before BNT (Bulgarian National Television). In his words, after 1-year operation, the Agency for Food has detected that the imposed fines were austere, but not high enough. Their amendment was envisaged by the new Food Act Bill. It provides for anyone using food additives, flavorings or solvents which are banned or whose content is substantially higher than the specified, to be penalised with up to BGN 1,500 instead of the current fine of BGN 500. Thus, the penalty could leap up to BGN 2, 500, if the offense is repeated. Besides, there is a 3-fold increase in the penalty for violations related to the advertising and labeling of foodstuffs. The offenders will be fined with up to BGN 3, 000 instead of the hitherto penalty of BGN 1,000.

The fake food of unknown origin or with expired shelf-life that we could find in the kitchens of the most glamorous restaurant as well as in kindergartens and in resorts' kitchens can definitely spoil our holiday or ultimately destroy the image of Bulgaria, substantiated himself the Agricultural Minister .

Meanwhile, the State Fund Agriculture and the Bulgarian Association of Dairy Processors signed a contract on the programme worth € 3 mln.promoting Bulgarian yogurt and cheese in Russia and Brazil. Besides, there will be 3-year implementation deadline. The project will advertise primarily white brined cheese and yogurt. Half of the project budget will be funded by the European Agricultural Guarantee Fund.
