16 independent MPs to set up a new party this autumn

“Voters all over the country demand a new right-wing political formation - this is the conclusion from our meetings,” said yesterday for Klassa Ventsislav Varbanov, an independent MP who left the parliamentary group of the Blue Coalition. He explained that two steps would be needed for this to happen: the establishment of a parliamentary group and then that of a political party.

The independent MPs shared their ideas at a meeting with US Ambassador James Warlick on July 7. They informed Mr Warlick that, although they are members of different parties, they have a common position on several issues and actually act as a parliamentary group. Unfortunately, they cannot present themselves as such a group because the rules of the National Assembly do not allow this.

“There are 16 independent MPs backing the idea of a new political formation,” announced yesterday for the Bulgarian National Radio their spokesman Dimitar Chukarski, an independent deputy who left the parliamentary group of the Order, Law and Justice (OLJ) party. Currently, there are 17 independent MPs in Parliament who are members of Ataka, OLJ and the Blue Coalition.

According to Chukarski, half of the new independent MPs have been deprived of their right to work in committees and are not able to take a stand on political issues. Chukarski argued that they were united by their right-wing political views and the notion that the current government is the most suitable for the moment.
