An extra BGN 2 mln to be allocated for Bulgarian schools abroad

“The funds allocated under the National Programme Bulgarian Own Language and Culture Abroad have been increased by BGN 2 mln this year,“ announced yesterday Deputy Minister of Education Milena Damyanova at a roundtable on the education policy of Bulgarian schools abroad.

With these funds, the total amount under the programme is BGN 4.04 mln. Damyanova explained that, currently, the work on the most important issues affecting the educational institutions abroad is under way. These are the status of Bulgarian schools, the standards for electronic textbooks and school appliances, distance learning and others. Some of these issues will be regulated by the new Bill for School Education, and working groups are dealing with the rest.

Nearly 20,000 children are being trained in our schools abroad. "Currently there are 185 Bulgarian educational units abroad," said Rosen Ivanov, Chairman of the State Agency for Bulgarians Abroad. He said that there were some 79 schools in Europe, 40 in the Ukraine and 16 in Moldova. The schools in the USA are 31 and those in Asia, Africa and Oceania - 19. Ivanov explained that, this year alone, some 11 new schools had been established in Spain and it was expected for 3 more to be set up by the end of the autumn.

Natalia Mihalevska, Head of the School System division at the Ministry of Education, Youth and Science explained that the number of projects applications under the Bulgarian Own Language and Culture Abroad Programme had increased. In 2011, the submitted projects to the Ministry of Education were 145, from 34 countries. Out of those, some 137 projects of schools abroad were approved.
