Prof. Borislav Borissov, Rector of the University of National and World Economy: It is great that Bulgarian universities can open branches abroad

- Prof. Borissov, how many students did you admit this year and what are the most popular majors? Are there any changes compared to last year?
- Considering the fact that the number of the secondary school graduates was higher than the initially announced intake quota of our university, I have to say that all our vacancies were occupied as early as the first exam, even with wait listed applicants.

- Will there be changes in your programmes during the new academic year? You said you will gradually introduce online examinations.
- Since last year, the entrance exams at the University of National and World Economy are being carried out in two ways: a paper-based test, which is evaluated electronically and an online test. The second option requires every applicant to enter online his/her Civil Identification Number and the server generates for him/her some 80 questions from a database of 1,500 possibl. Candidates can think and modify their answers for a period of 2 hours. After that, the online examination system ends the test and the final assessment is immediately displayed on the monitor. The applicant can sit for the exam as many times as she/he wants.

For the first time this year, the online test was used for two semester exams in the Macroeconomics and Informatics majors. Our objective for next year is that all semester exams of the first-year fundamental block be offered electronically.

Currently, online testing is carried out in three halls furnished with some 170 computers. On the 11 of November this year, we will be opening the new Test Center equipped with more than 200 computers, where students would be able to sit for individual tests in different fields.

- The amendments to the Higher Education Act provides that universities would be able to cooperate and open branches abroad. Do you think this will minimize the outflow of Bulgarian students abroad?
- It is great that Bulgarian universities would be able to open their own branches abroad. Why, have we not established, for instance, a Bulgarian university branch for Bessarabian Bulgarians?
The opposite option for university franchising, however terrifies me! How can some deep provincial college in country N be able to license just any hocum university in  Bulgaria to issue a Graduate Diploma to any D student here, bearing the stamp of the same allegedly world-renowned college?!
