Margarita Popova: A run-off would be a surprise

“I would be surprised if there is a second tour of the presidential elections with candidates like Rossen Plevneliev and myself. Still anything is possible,” GERB’s nominee for vice-president, Margarita Popova said on bTV today. She added that she shared PM Boyko Borissov's view that the Vice President could stand by the President instead of behind him in their future work.

“Mr Plevneliev and I will work transparently and professionally for the modernisation of the country and will prove that such actions cannot be easily ignored ,” said Popova.

During the registration at the Central Election Commission (CEC), however, Margarita Popova showed that she would by no means be a vice president always saying ‘yes’ and stated that she would not hand her resignation as Minister of Justice.

“Rossen handed his resignation and this was his own decision. But it has never crossed my mind that I have to resign in order to participate in this campaign,” commented Popova today.

According to her, it is of particular importance that one of the candidates for president and vice president be a lawyer.

On September 5, GERB’s nominees Plevneliev and Popova personally visited the CEC to register their candidacies, accompanies by Tsvetan Tsvetanov, Deputy PM, Interior Minister and Head of the party’s election headquarters.

“I am very well motivated and I am calm,” said Rossen Plevneliev on leaving the CEC. He pointed to BSP’s candidates for the presidential elections as the major competitors of GERB’s nominees.

Meanwhile, BSP’s candidate for president Ivaylo Kalfin also said that Plevneliev was his chief rival. At this stage, sociological polls show that Plevneliev and Kalfin would gather most of the votes, with quite a big advantage for GERB and a great probability for a run-off. According to predictions, the independent candidate for president Meglena Kuneva will be among the first three winners with the greatest number of votes in the ballot, who will stand better chances than Kalfin in an eventual run-off.
