Prices down 0.3% in August alone

In August prices of goods and services in the country declined by 0.3%, as measured via the consumer price index (CPI). This is the second month of deflation, since the beginning of the year, after the National Statistics Institute reported
a price decrease of 0.9% in June. Life has become 1.5% more expensive since December last year, but compared to August 2010 – prices were up by 4.1%. The average annual inflation for the period September 2010 - August 2011 was 4.5%, compared to the period September 2009 - August 2010.

Life in February become 1.2% more expensive, which was the highest increase recorded on a monthly basis, given that inflation stood at 0.6%, in January. In March alone, the prices of goods and services rose again by 0.6%, in April the increase slowed down to 0.2%. In May, the CPI froze at 0.0%, in July monthly inflation was 0.4%. The Government forecasted a price growth of goods and services of 3.6% for the entire 2011.

Generally, inflation is following a declining trend over the summer period, on an annual basis. The CPI was 4.6% in April, compared to April 2010, 4.8% in May, again 4.8% in June, and 4.4% in July. The highest annual inflation was recorded in March - 5.6%, after 4.5% in January and 5.2% a month later.

In August, garments and shoes were the commodities, that got most cheaper recording a 1.7% decline (garments were down by 1.3%, footwear - by 2.5%, furniture - by 1.4%). Food and beverage prices declined by 0.6%, and alcoholic beverages and tobacco by 0.2%, showed the NSI data. However, the rents for apartments, the prices for maintenance and routine repairs, and the bills for water, electricity, gas and other fuels – increased by 0.2%.
