Agriculture Minister promises to eliminate chaos in the forestry sector

With the new Forestry Act the Ministry of Agriculture and Food plans to put an edn to the chaos in the Bulgarian forestry, Agriculture Minister Miroslav Naydenov said in Razlog. “We intend to put an end to the collection of fees for lumbering a cubic metre of timber. The forest is big, but it should not to be a compensation for someone’s wage, commented Naydenov.

The new Ordinance on lumbering stipulates that at least 50% of the logged timber should go directly to the commodity exchange where everyone would be able to buy freely. The Ordinance also stipulates that another 25% of the timber will be logged by lumbering enterprises via a long-term contract. The remaining 25% of the timber will be earmarked for the local population at warehouse prices. “The big problem of lumbering companies at present is their lack of capacity for logging the timber for which there is demand,” commented Naydenov. According to him, no investments have been made in the Bulgarian forests for years.

The annual quantity of timber logged in our country currently stands at about 4.5 million cubic metres. The sanitary minimum, however, is double that quantity, i.e. the timber logged is only 60% of the necessary quantity. Despite the widespread myths about the indiscriminate lumbering, the quantity of timber logged in Bulgaria is not enough, according to the Agriculture Minister. The main reason is the lack of any investments in Bulgarian forests. There are no improvements, there are no even roads. Therefore, the Agriculture Minister has suggested that individual forest areas should be granted on concession.
