Kostov urges DSB supporters to vote for Plevneliev

The national leadership of DSB (Democrats for Strong Bulgaria) appealed to its supporters to cast their ballots for Rosen Plevneliev in the runoff of the presidential elections. “His rival Ivaylo Kalfin is what we do not want to see as president, especially since he is backed by Ahmed Dogan (editor’s note: leader of the ethnic Turks’ Movement for Rights and Freedoms),” the party leader Ivan Kostov stated at his first press conference after the first round of the elections. However, Kostov set several conditions to Plevneliev in order to be supported by DSB’s voters who ‘are not soldiers’ in his words. The presidential candidate of GERB (Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria) was advised to uphold the positions advocated by Meglena Kuneva (editor’s note: the presidential contender who ranked third during the first round) in connection with the national and energy security of the country, which will be disrupted in case the Belene NPP and other Russian energy projects are implemented.

“If Plevneliev wants to get this support, let him intervene with all his authority of a person representing GERB to stop the ongoing nuisance in the counting of the election ballots,” insisted Ivan Kostov. However, he stated explicitly that this recommendation by DSB does not mean support for GERB’s Government.

DSB’s leader distanced the party and the Blue Coalition from the fiasco of Rumen Hristov, who received less than 2% of the votes and remained 7th among the presidential candidates. Kostov described as gross misrepresentation the statements that Rumen Hristov was a candidate of the Blue Coalition.

“DSB’s conclusion is that we were placed in circumstances of an unsuccessful formula for participation in these presidential elections,” Kostov commented laconically. He declined to make any forecasts for the future of the Blue Coalition since this was not discussed by the national leadership of DSB.

The Chairman of UDF (United Democratic Forces), Martin Dimitrov, also refused to predict the future of the Blue Coalition.
