Use of illegal software in Bulgaria down by 2%

Over the last year and a half, the domestic use rate of illegal software in Bulgaria has decreased by 2 per cent, which is the largest decline registered in Southeast Europe since 2006, stated Georgi Damyanov, Head of the Copyright and Neighbouring Rights Directorate with the Ministry of Culture (MC), cited by the BTA (Bulgaria Telegraph Agency).
According to statistical data, a legal software worth $ 2 mln more was purchased, added he. There was a decline of 67 to 65 per cent in the use of the pirated business software, but in Western Europe, its share reached 30-35 percent.

For a fourth consecutive year nowpenalties Bulgaria is ranked out of the so-called black list or the Special 301 Report of the U.S. Trade Representative, which includes countries failing to provide sufficient conditions safeguarding the intellectual property rights.

Taxes and fees imposed and collected by the MC amounted to some BGN 80, 000 or about 30 percent less than 2010, which means that the software users have started already to comply with the provisions of the Copyright and Neighbouring Rights Act.
