Hotels in Pamporovo occupied at 90%

“Mainly Bulgarian tourists have been the customers of the hotel facilities in Pamporovo since the beginning of the ski season,” announced officials from the Rodopi Regional Tourist Association, quoted by the BTA news agency. In the days around Christmas and the New Year's holidays, Bulgarian, Russian, Greek, Turkish, Serbian and Macedonian tourists dominated the resort in numbers. More Russian groups are expected in the days around the 7th of January, when people celebrate Christmas in Russia. During the first weeks after the start of the winter season, hotels were occupied at around 90%.

“The beginning of the season was successful for hotel entrepreneurs in Pamporovo,” said Panteley Memtsov, President of the association. According to tour operators, this is partly due to the fact that, this year, the ski season at the Vitosha mountain is blocked.

“There is a decline of about 20% in the number of British tourists, compared to last winter,” informed Panteley Memtsov. The decrease is associated with the suspended charter flights from London to the Plovdiv Airport this winter. British tourists have to land in Sofia, which has extended their travel to the resort by several hours.
According to him, the scandal with the tourists moved from the Orpheus hotel, which was offered for sale, has not caused a withdrawal of tourists so far but it will likely affect the image of the resort.

The Chairman of the Bulgarian Tourist Chamber Professor Tsvetan Tonchev described 2011 as "good for Bulgarian tourism”. According to him, the tourist industry reported good earnings, regardless of the financial crisis. Revenues from foreign customers stood at €2.7 bn and those from Bulgarian tourists – at BGN 1 bn. "Bulgaria deserves to receive at least €5 bn in revenues from international tourism, given that Croatia records some €8-9 bn, Montenegro - over €3 bn, Finland - over €5 bn. Not to mention Greece and Turkey. However, we must develop tourist products related to health recovery and sports," he added. The Chairman of the Bulgarian Tourist Chamber said that the winter 2011/2012 season also appears to be good.
