DSB proposes a fourth amendment to the Law on Protection of Competition

The MPs from the Democrats for Strong Bulgaria (DSB) party started the new political season with a project for amendments and complements to the Law on Protection of Competition. The Deputy Chairman of DSB Radan Kanev announced the news yesterday at a briefing after the meeting of the party leadership.

“We think that the management of GERB (Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria) not only does not help but harms the competitive environment in Bulgaria,” stated Radan Kanev. According to him, the Government has become a defender of the monopolies in the country and the Commission for the Protection of Competition (CPC) has turned into a player with poor contribution to the protection of the market economy principles. For this reason, changes in the law will be needed. DSB's leaders will first refer the proposed bill to the Union of Democratic Forces (UDF) and then to the other parliamentary forces. "The corruption in public procurement orders and monopolies distort the market and affect the income of Bulgarians. There is strong evidence that crimes against open competition are being committed under the management of GERB,"commented Kanev and gave as an example the price of sugar, which was increased by 50% in 2011 in Bulgaria, while on world markets it fell by 20%.

"The CPC does not work efficiently and one of the main reasons for this is that the law which is in force now is the worst one, although it is the third in a row after 1991," said Dimitar Bachvarov, Chairman of the Party Committee of Economics and Finances. According to him, the prepared amendments to the law are aimed at the creation of an effective interaction between the institutions in order to counter violations of competition rules and the related to these tax and financial crimes. "We will consider with care the proposal but let's see it first," said for Klassa UDF leader Martin Dimitrov.
