NRA audits 11 high-ranking officials, a Deputy Prime Minister among them

“The National Revenue Agency (NRA) is auditing 11 high-ranking officials,” the agency’s Executive Director, Krasimir Stefanov, said during the signing of a cooperation agreement with the National Audit Office. A total of 561 signals were submitted to NRA and the Audit Office by 2011. NRA inspected 494 of the cases and established a considerable disparity between the assets and income of 11 high-ranking officials. NRA specified that among these 11 officials are a Deputy Prime Minister, a Deputy Governor, chairpersons of municipal councils, judges at district courts, a member of a political party and deputy mayors.

“Last week, we ordered another 167 audits of high-ranking state officials as a result of the inspections carried out by the Audit Office last year,” said Stefanov.

Professor Valeriy Dimitrov, President of the Audit Office, explained that after the completion of the audits, the results will be sent to the Audit Office and publicly announced. “The Audit Office is launching an audit of the reports submitted by all the participants in the recent presidential and local elections. We will have to inspect almost 1,700 participants in the elections,” specified Professor Dimitrov. “We can report a significant progress to the organisation GRECO (Council of Europe’s Group of States against Corruption), because we believe we have fulfilled most of their recommendations, the agreement between NRA and the Audit Office,” he added.

The Audit Office will already have at its disposal more tools for gathering information about the financial and property status of public officials. The employees of the Audit Office will have access to tax-records of these people at NRA. The agreement between the Audit Office and NRA is a result of the recommendations of GRECO, whose examination was completed three years ago.
