Former presidents Stoyanov and Parvanov disagree over the events on 4 February 1997

Frmer Bulgarian presidents Georgi Parvanov (2002-2012) and Petar Stoyanov (1997-2002) entered into a heated albeit indirect dispute over the political events of 4 February 1997. At that time, Parvanov as a BSP leader and the nominee for prime minister, Nikolay Dobrev returned to the then acting president Petar Stoyanov, the mandate for the formation of a second government after the failure of the cabinet of Zhan Videnov

Before Nova TV and the Bulgarian National Radio, Petar Stoyanov described as "one of the most persistent myths in modern history" the claim that besides sumbitting the file with the list of nominees for ministries, Parvanov and Dobrev brought to the Presidency a second folder containing the BSP refusal to form a new government as well.

"There were not two files. There was actually only one containing the composition of the BSP Cabinet," retorted Stoyanov. According to him, the real heroes in February were the enthusiastic young people, who staged street protests across Bulgaria against the BSP cynical unwillingness to transform itself. Under these crisis conditions, Petar Stoyanov convened the onsultative Council for National Security to exert collective pressure on the BSP to quit its term in office.

"The position of Mr Stoyanov is a little funny," commented Georgi Parvanov in Varna. According to him, the important thing is that "at the time a few people demonstrated political maturity and wisdom and took a crucial decision for Bulgaria and its civil peace."
