British expert: Shale gas drilling and earthquakes are directly connected

“There is a direct connection between shale gas drilling and earthquakes,” Anthony Grayling, Head of the Climate Change and Municipalities department with the State Agency for Environmental Protection in England and Wales, said on Monday. According to him, these conclusions were made after shale gas drilling in Lancashire. “For that reason, although no formal moratorium has been imposed in the UK, explorations using the hydraulic fracturing method are not being carried out at present,” said Grayling. The British Government has appointed an independent survey of seismic activity to determine the risks of earthquakes as a result of the so-called hydraulic fracking and to propose ways to minimise and control these risks. New permits for shale gas exploration are not being granted at present.

“We believe that we can explore for shale gas while controlling the environmental risks,” added the expert. According to him, it is possible to find a technology that could avoid the earthquakes triggered by hydraulic fracking.
