EIA to be compulsory for shale gas prospecting

“The environmental impact assessment (EIA) will be compulsory for the prospecting for unconventional hydrocarbons, including shale gas, not for the extraction alone,” provide amendments to the Environmental Protection Act adopted on second reading by Parliament.

“The provisions are consensual,” said Chairwoman of the Parliamentary Environment and Water Committee Iskra Mihailova (Movement for Rights and Freedoms). She noted that, in cases of danger to people or to the environment, a review of the permits for all types of installations, not only for those for unconventional hydrocarbons was foreseen.

“Even when prospecting for conventional gas, if it is proven that an earthquake or contamination of water could be trigged, the installation will be suspended and new prescriptions will be made,” explained Mihailova. “Our goal is to use the existing technologies, but also to protect people and the environment,” she said.
She noted that another focus of the project was the transposition of the EU directive on carbon dioxide emissions and their inclusion as a component of any permits for installations.
