The opposition demands an investigation committee on drug prices

The parliamentary opposition gave an ultimatum to GERB (Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria) to vote for the establishment of an investigation committee by Wednesday in order to deal with the drug scandal. Otherwise, the opposition parties will create a second informal committee, similar to the one which investigates the case of Miroslava in Pernik. The drug committee will be in charge of investigating the scandal with the prices of medicines. If an informal one is set up, it will consist only of MPs from the Bulgarian Socialist Party,  the Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF), the Blue Coalition and independent MPs.

However, it is possible that the committee will be official and will include MPs from GERB as well. Maya Manolova from Coalition for Bulgaria made the proposal yesterday at the beginning of the plenary meeting. She demanded that her proposal be entered as an extraordinary item in the weekly program of the National Assembly.

The MPs from GERB surprisingly voted "for" the request of Manolova, but did not accept the item to become the second point on the agenda for Thursday. So it remained the last issue for the week and it is quite likely for it not to be debated at all.

This infuriated the opposition and, most of all, the socialist Maya Manolova and Lutvi Mestan from MRF, who interpreted the behaviour of GERB as a tactic to postpone the issue indefinitely. “For sure, there will be no official committee, so we will create a parallel one,” said Manolova and Mestan during a press conference in Parliament.
