Bulgaria ranked at the bottom in the EU in terms of volunteer work

Bulgaria was ranked 24th among the 27 EU member-states in terms of the share of the population engaged in volunteer work, according to the data of the Eurobarometer survey conducted in the EU countries.

Over a quarter of EU citizens said that they were engaged in some kind of volunteer work. The data showed that the old member-states (EU 15) are much more willing to participate in volunteer work than the newly-accepted 12 countries - Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Cyprus, Latvia, Lithuania, Hungary, Malta, Poland, Romania, Slovenia, Slovakia. 29% of the residents of the old EU members-states are engaged in voluntary initiatives, while this rate for the new member-states is only 16%.

Bulgaria was ranked at the bottom of the list. Slightly over one-tenth (12%) of Bulgarian citizens said that they are involved in some kind of volunteer work. Based on this result, our country ranked 24th among the EU-27. The percentage in Bulgaria is not only lower than the EU average, but also lower than the average for the new EU member-states.

The main reason for the lack of volunteer activity among Europeans as a whole is the lack of time. This reason was mentioned by 50% of Europeans who are not involved as volunteers. The second reason is the lack of interest in such activities - a quarter of EU respondents share this opinion. In our country, however, the predominant reason for Bulgarians not to get involved in volunteer work is the lack of interest in such activities. 41% of Bulgarian citizens openly admit that they are not interested in volunteer work. A bit under one-third of the respondents stated that they do not have time to participate in volunteer work. About one-tenth of Bulgarian citizens acknowledged that they do not participate in voluntary activities and campaigns because of the lack of sufficient information as to how to begin volunteering or which organisation to contact.
