Sofia ranks fifth in the EU in terms of new car sales

Bulgaria ranked fifth in the European Union (EU) in terms of new car sales in March, compared to the same month of 2010, showed data of the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA). A total of 1,612 new cars were sold in the country during the third month of the year, or 29.7% up from a year ago. Latvia topped the ranking with a 161.4% increase in new car sales, followed by Lithuania (118.8%) and Estonia (86.9%). Finland was also among the first five in the list, with a 38% growth in new car sales. Demand for new vehicles increased also in the Netherlands (26.8%), Germany (11%) and France (6.1%).

The highest decline, compared to last year was registered in Greece where new car sales fell by 55.2% in March, followed by Spain with a decline of 29% and Italy (28%).

A total of 1.6 million new cars were sold in Europe in March, almost 5% less than in the same month of 2010, ACEA data showed. Fiat, Ford and Renault reported the highest drop in sales. Last month, the biggest decrease was registered by Fiat whose sales declined by 20% year-on-year, followed by Ford with a 16% drop, and Renault (14%). The top German and European car maker Volkswagen benefited from the steady demand in Germany. Its sales in Europe rose by 4% to 346,817 new vehicles last month. The company’s market share in European sales increased by 21.6%, compared to 19.8% a year earlier.
