David Cameron congratulates the Bulgarian GERB government on the adoption of the Criminal Assets Forfeiture Act

The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, David Cameron sent a letter to Prime Minister Boyko Borissov congratulating the Bulgarian GERB government on its success in the adoption of the new Criminal Assets Forfeiture Act on the seizure of property acquired from criminal activity. This was announced on Wednesday by the government Information Office.

The British Prime Minister wrote that he was familiarised with the presence of considerable resistance against the adoption of the document. "I am glad that we managed to assist the adoption by supporting you to pass this law," noted Prime Minister Cameron. He also reminded that the assistance provided by the British representatives for sharing the experience of the United Kingdom after rejecting the myth that similar legislation does not exist anywhere else.

"I know that this Act has received the powerful support of the European Commission as part of a Mechanism for Cooperation and Verification and I am sure that your efforts will be reflected in the next monitoring report. More importantly, the Law will be an important weapon in the fight against organised crime. In Britain, the seizure of criminal assets is at the core of our strategy of combating organised crime and this is not because of the demands imposed by Brussels but because experience showed that this measure is effective," stressed Cameron. His letter highlighted that Borissov and Interior Minister Tsvetanov have committed themselves to dismantling criminal networks.

"This is of great importance for us as well because organised crime in the Balkans affects the United Kingdom. We are glad that our law enforcement authorities managed to collaborate for the protection of both our countries," stated the Prime Minister of Great Britain.
