Semerdjiev: There is nearly threefold increase in NEK's additional price for green energy

“There will be yet another increase in the price of electricity,” said Angel Semerdjiev, Chairman of the State Energy and Water Regulatory Commission (SEWRC), in an interview for bTV channel. He admitted that all thermal power stations needed to raise prices as a result of efforts to meet the targets for carbon emissions. The potential costs for greenhouse gases have already been calculated, but next year’s appreciation of power is unlikely to reach the 20%, reported earlier by Klassa.bg. Such scenario is rather pessimistic, according to Semerdjiev.

“Pricing is based on projections of the National Electric Company's (NEK) operators and distributers of energy to end-users. I cannot agree with the criticism of Delian Dobrev, Minister of Economy, Energy and Tourism, that the SEWRC had been fully aware four months in advance that the price of power would rise with more than the initially annonced 10%,”said SEWRC Chairman.

“Both in May and June there were additional renewable energy capacities due to the anticipated sharp fall in prices in July. According to Semerdjiev, NEK's additional price for green energy had been BGN 3.72 per megawatt until April this year, but afterwards it was twice reevaluated at respectively BGN 8 and BGN 11.10. Investors in green power sought to add 12,000 megawatts of capacity to Bulgaria's energy system. However, following a series of steps, these have been decreased to 4,000 megawatts, and are probably going to be no more than 2,000 megawatts,” said Semerdjiev.
