Up to €700 mln under OP Transport to be used on the third metro diameter

Up to €700 mln under the next period of the Operational Programme Transport will be allotted for the planning and construction of the third metro diameter, Ivaylo Moskovski, Minister of Transport, Information Technology and Communications, told journalists. The route will connect Vladimir Vazov Blvd with the residential district of Ovcha Kupel. The construction works are expected to start in 2014. "The second metro diameter should be in full operation by the end of August," said Mayor of Sofia, Ms. Jordanka Fandakova, during a demonstration of two new trains, which will run on 25% less energy. The new machines will travel on the two currently operating routes. The daily schedule of the second diameter is intended to start with 12 trains over the whole course, with the number gradually progressing to take account of rush-hour dynamics, optimising the utilisation of trains, explained Fandakova.

The metro is equipped with an already functioning special security system. There is complete video surveillance, an operating centre on the premises of the underground and police patrols. The system will be implemented in the second diameter too, with all the technology and procedures the police can provide, including trained dogs. Expanding video surveillance is of upmost importance, Fandakova said, because of its proven effectiveness in curbing crime. "No one is completely safe so far as terrorist attacks are concerned, but we have to do everything in our power to make sure people feel protected," added Fandakova.

Minister Ivaylo Moskovski and Mayor Fandakova took journalists in order to show them how the construction of the second metro diameter is progressing. The group was moving from one station to the next with the help of a trolley and an open platform.
