Bulgaria seeks BGN 4 bn for the 2014-20 phase of the OP "Regional Developmen"

"We aim for a 15% increase in the funding capacity of the Operational Programme "Regional Developmen", which will bring it to BGN 4 bn for the 2014-20 planning period", said Denitsa Nikolova, head of Regional Development Programming at the Ministry of Regional Development and Public Works, according to Focus. "We hope to come out of our negotiations with the European Commission with a budget that is at least the amount provided for the current programme phase," Nikolova explained. The largest share of the money under the new period, about 60% of all funds, will be set aside for the urban development priority axis.

A National Strategy for Spatial Development of Republic of Bulgaria is being worked out. The undertaking is divided into five levels, with megapolises in the first and villages in the fifth. "At the moment, 36 cities form the main focus at the operational level," Nikolova added and reminded that it is EC policy to rely on cities as growth hubs and engines.

She gave an account of everything that has been accomplished in the 2007-13 period of OP "Regional Developmen". The programme's budget is more than BGN 3 bn, spread over five priority axes - "Sustainable and Integrated Urban Development" (BGN 1.807 bn), Regional and Local Accessibility (BGN 662 mln), Sustainable Tourism Development (BGN 334 mln), Local development and co-operation (BGN 223 mln), Technical Assistance (BGN 105 mln).
