Eurobarometer: Almost one in ten Internet users in Bulgaria access the network via smartphones or tablets

Some 6% of Internet users in Bulgaria access the network via their mobile phones and 2% use tablets, showed a survey conducted by Eurobarometer in the EU Member States.

The development of new technologies in the field of smartphones, tablets and touch-screen devices as a whole began to significantly change the habits and behaviour of Internet users with regard to information search, communication and even online shopping. The availability of devices such as smartphones and tablets enables users to be online anytime and anywhere.

The latest survey of Eurobarometer studied the penetration of various such devices into the Internet audience of EU countries.

Currently, equal shares of Internet users across Europe use desktop computers and laptops to access the global network. A little over 60% of Europeans using the Internet access it via desktop PCs or laptops.

Romania is the State with the highest percentage of “fixed” Internet users, i.e. such accessing the network through desktop computers. A total of 83% of the Internet users in our northern neighbour country have online access via desktop PCs and the share of people using laptops to access the Internet is significantly lower than the EU average - only 28% against the EU average of 61%.

Laptops are most commonly used in Cyprus, Ireland and Denmark. Some 80% of the people in these countries enter the network via laptops. Ireland is the country with the lowest share of people entering accessing the network via desktop PCs - 39%.

As to more innovative technologies, about a quarter of the Internet users in the Community as a whole use smartphones to access the global network. The highest percentage of people using the Internet via mobile phones is in Sweden - more than half of the Internet audience in the Scandinavian country access the network via smartphones. A relatively higher percentage of people use smartphones in Denmark (44%) and the UK (42%).

Tablet users in the EU in general account for about 6% of the Internet users in the EU Member States. The highest number of people using the new technology to access the Internet is among the residents of Sweden and the Netherlands. Some 16% of the Internet users in these countries have online access on their touch-screen computers. The countries with the lowest use of tablets are Greece and Hungary – with 1% of the Internet users.

The desktop PC is the most popular device for Internet access among the Bulgarian “online population”. Some 79% of the Internet users in our country access the global network in this way. A little less than 40% access the Internet via laptops.

Smartphones and tablets are still rarely used by Bulgarians, compared to the EU as a whole. Only 6% of the Internet users access the network via their mobile phones and 2% - via tablets.
