Judges choose their representatives in the Supreme Judicial Council in a 24-hour meeting

After two rounds of voting in a grueling session, 426 Bulgarian judges elected their six representatives in the new Supreme Judicial Council (SJC), the press office of the body announced. The meeting, which took place in the National Palace of Culture, lasted an unprecedented 24 hours, with real-time coverage on the site of SJC.

The new SJC members out of the judges' quota are Judge Kamen Ivanov from the Sofia Court of Appeal, Judge Julia Kovacheva from the Supreme Administrative Court (SAC), Judge Milka Itova from the Sofia City Court, Judge Daniela Kostova from the Varna District Court, Judge Galia Georgieva from the Plovdiv Court of Appeals and Judge Kalin Kalpakchiev from the Sofia Court of Appeals.

During the first round of voting Kamen Ivanov of the Sofia Court of Appeal (SCA) received the support of 244 delegates, making him the only candidate to go above the necessary threshold of 215 votes.

Some magistrates said that three of the newly-elected members of SJC (Ivanov, Itova and Georgieva), are part of the inner circle of SAC's head, Georgi Kolev, the head of SCA, Veselin Pangezov, Sotir Tsatsarov (head of the Plovdiv District Court) and Vanuhi Arakelyan (head of Varna District Court). This made their appointments a foregone conclusion despite their far-from-ingenious concepts for justice system reforms.
