D. Dobrev: The referendum on the Belene NPP to be held within three months

The referendum on the Belene NPP project will be held within three months, said in Sandanski Energy Minister Delian Dobrev, announced on Tuesday the Bulgarian National Radio. According to him, however, the question which the citizens will answer needs to be defined by the National Assembly.

The specific question has to be discussed via debates in the National Assembly and the deputies should formulate it in the best manner in order it to be eligible under the Bulgarian legislation and to give a clear answer to all the questions we have. This is a matter of competency for the deputies but whatever they may ask themselves, the answer should be clear enough, said Minister Delian Dobrev.

According to the referendum law, a referendum should be held within three months from the confirmation of the validity of the claim and this was September 29. GERB will comply with this request, which means that in December 2012 or in January 2013 at the latest, there will be a referendum, said this morning for bTV GERB MP Dobroslav Dimitrov, who is also a member of the energy committee in the National Assembly.

Parliament has not revoked yet the decision which GERB proposed about a mandate for negotiations with a private investor for the Belene NPP, National Assembly Chairperson Tsetska Tsacheva said later.

Early on Tuesday, Darik radio broadcast an interview with Murray Matiowsky, head of Manitoba Hydro Telecommunications - the only company which has so far been able to confirm that it is working with one of the mysterious American businessmen who want to invest in Belene NPP. I have worked in a nuclear power plant and I have been in nuclear research for many years. The construction of such a facility takes a whole decade without even taking into account the preparation and planning. It sounds very doubtful to me".
