Desislava Atanasova opposed to giving birth at home

A baby was born dead when the mother attempted to give birth at home in the Bourgas region, Focus announced. The birth began at 2:00 in the morning, but the parents did not call 112 and did not seek help from a doctor or from the obstetrician who was following the pregnancy. The birth lasted about four hours, as the first signal to 112 and to the Centre for Emergency Medical Care was submitted at 5:59 a.m. When the ambulance arrived, the doctors found out that the condition of the mother was good, but the child was dead. The mother was admitted to a ward for a follow-up.

"To preserve the life of the infant, and the life of the mother, delivery should be done in hospitals only," said for Focus Health Minister Desislava Atanasova regarding the case. According to Atanasova, legalising birth at home will raise the cost of the process many times. "The state pays at the moment of birth, whether the mother is insured or not. If additional teams will have to be provided for home birth, it should be clear who will pay for this and if there are consequences or a bad concurrence of circumstances and the woman in child-birth needs to be admitted to hospital because of complications, it should also be clear who will bear the burden of that, " noted the Health Minister.

In late October, the Bulgarian Helsinki Committee (BHC) announced that it will file a case against Bulgaria in the European Court of Human Rights because the law does not allow expectant mothers to give birth at home in the presence of a medical practitioner. According to human rights activists, laws which restrict the right of women to choose where to give birth are in violation of her right to personal life.
