Violations amounting to BGN 371,000 discovered in one of BAS' institutes

Violations amounting to BGN 371,000 were discovered at the Institute of Experimental Pathology and Morphology at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS). The money was misappropriated by the cashier and the institute's CFO. This was announced at an extraordinary press conference by Eugene Nickolov, Deputy Chairman and temporary President of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. The money was misappropriated in the period from mid-2010 until the end of August 2012. The violations were discovered after an inspection in August and September 2012 by the Internal Audit Office. The inspection report was deposited at the Academy on October 3 this year and was signed by the late President of BAS Prof. Dodunekov.

According to Nickolov, violations were discovered in the formation of salaries of employees of the institute, as some administrative positions were better paid than those of associate professors and professors. The investigation also discovered a fake diploma of the institute's CFO, issued on 30.06. 2010 by the University of National and World Economy (UNWE), the President of BAS noted.

Immediately after the violation was discovered, BAS' management held three special meetings within a few days and the reports by the National Audit, as well as all the investigation's documentation, were submitted to the General Prosecutor's Office and GD National Police. The institute's cashier was immediately discharged and the Director of the Institute and the Director of the Financial Department at BAS took a leave of absence in order to reduce the tension, Eugene Nickolov explained.
