Bulgaria is among the countries with low consumption of fish

“According to official statistics, Bulgaria is among the countries with low annual consumption of fish - 5.4 kg per capita,” said Professor Liliana Hadzhinikolova, Director of the Institute for Fisheries and Aquaculture at the Agricultural Academy in Plovdiv. “By comparison, the average annual consumption per capita is 18.6 kg in the world, 22 kg in Europe, 20.7 kg in Asia and 24.1 kg in North America. China is the country with the highest annual consumption, estimated at 31.9 kg per capita. The Institute carries out research and provides scientific and methodological assistance to fish producers in the country,” said Professor Hadzhinikolova.

The scientific team of the Institute offers traditional technologies for growing fish and crayfish in various polycultures, produces and sells strengthened larvae, small fish, carp spawn, etc. The scientists give specialised consultations, prepare expert assessments and participate in training programmes.

Carp is a traditional fish, bred in inland waters of the country. “This year, the scientists at the Institute have begun work on a research project entitled The Quality of the Meat of Carp Grown in Different Production Systems,” specified Professor Hadzhinikolova. The research will result in a system for type assessing the quality of carp. It will help fish breeders protect their own or geographical trademarks.
