Nearly 1,600 Bulgarians admitted to British universities in 2012

Bulgarians registered the ninth highest number of students admitted to British universities of all international students in the UK.

Nearly 1,600 Bulgarians were admitted to undergraduate programmes at British universities in 2012. This is shown by preliminary data of UCAS - the organisation through which applications are processed for entry to higher education in the UK.

Bulgaria is among the countries showing a relatively slight decrease in the number of admitted students in 2012, compared to the previous year - about 8%. Despite this slight decline, the country moved up from the 11th to the 9th place in terms of the number of accepted applicants of all new international students in the UK. Bulgarians, who will begin their studies at British universities this year, are almost as many as the foreign students from Germany and surpass the number of admitted students from the USA, Spain, Greece and Italy.

UCAS statistics cover only newly admitted candidates to undergraduate programmes. The total number of Bulgarian students studying in the UK, regardless of the year of their training and whether they are in undergraduate or graduate programmes, is calculated by HESA (Higher Education Statistics Agency). The latest summary data from HESA is for 2010/2011 and shows that, for this period, the number of Bulgarians studying in the British educational system is 4,555.

The number of Bulgarian students in British universities has increased more than six times after the country joined the EU.

On November 11, representatives of 16 of the best universities in the UK with an interest in Bulgaria are coming in Sofia.

They will participate in the Education UK exhibition - the only exhibition in the country which is entirely dedicated to British education.

It is organised by the British Council - UK's international organisation on educational opportunities and cultural relations, in partnership with the British Embassy.
