Large-scale construction of private terminals instead of shopping malls observed

At least 10 new up-to-date private terminals will be launched into operation over the next five years, announced Georgi Minchev, Chairman of Bulgarian Association of Freight Forwarding, Transport and Logistics (NSBS) involved in the Conference on Intermodal Transport and Logistics.

Even now the private business sector is very active. In fact, the largest terminal complex is operating at the Yana Station, but there are also cargo handling facilities in the towns of Vidin, Gorna Oryahovitsa, Ruse, Stara Zagora.

Twenty years ago, Bulgaria was among the countries initiators of the introduction of new cargo handling technologies in the Balkan region. Between 1992 and 1995, joint ventures were also set up in order to operate for this branch. However, Bulgaria found no place in this project and considerably lagged behind in terms of logistics. Bulgaria is almost at a zero level in terms of intermodal transportation and all further initiatives will be many times greater than the current ones, commented Minchev said. According to him, even where the state has invested in recent years, there has been one-sidedness and market isolation. In fact, it cannot be demanded from the state to play a leading role and act as an innovative engine since this it the responsibility of the business sector. In transport, no extraordinary measures are needed but a normal order should be ensured, as well as compliance with the stipulated regulations.  Besides, only the effect of rule observance will increase the rate of freight traffic within the range of 15 - 25%, reckoned Georgi Minchev.

At present, the terminals are being constructed in the same manner as shopping malls were built, commented Simeon Ananiev, Chairman of the Bulgarian Association of Rail Carriers

Over the past two decades, the country has not had at its disposal a logistics project as stipulated by EU standards. We are 20 years behind the times since rail transport has not been upgraded at all and services the same category of clients. However, now we have another mobility, the distribution of people and cargo is quite different and we also dispose of more than 2 million vehicles, specified Ananiev. The future for both Bulgaria and Europe is connected with the integrated transport system, which is a higher upgrade of intermodal transport, This is how the expert commented on the Transport White Paper of the European Commission.
