Only Greece ranks ahead of Bulgaria in EU in terms of corruption

Bulgaria ranks 75th in terms of corruption in the public sector, according to Transparency International’s Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) 2012, released on December 5.

Our country is in the middle of the list, including 176 countries worldwide, with a score of 41. CPI is measured on a scale of 0 – 100 where 0 means that a country is perceived as highly corrupt and 100 means it is perceived as very clean.

Bulgaria is in a tie with Liberia, Montenegro and Tunisia. The only more corrupt country in the European Union than Bulgaria is Greece, which occupies the 94th place. Romania ranks 66th.

In CPI 2012, Denmark, Finland and New Zealand tie for the first place with scores of 90, while Somalia, North Korea and Afghanistan are the most corrupt countries in the world.

Two-thirds of the 176 countries included in Transparency International’s CPI ranking have scores below 50. This shows that State institutions should be more transparent and influential public officials should be held more accountable, read the report.

The organisation urged governments to integrate anti-corruption measures in all phases of decision-making.

Transparency International warned that better rules on lobbying and funding of political parties should be drafted. According to the organisation, measures should be taken for achieving greater transparency in public spending and signing contracts.
